It’s unfortunate but Arkansans are used to dealing with tornadoes every year. Although we’re typically prepared for a springtime touch down, the state has seen freak storms out of our realm of normal.  Our Natural State even has its own deadly tornado alley. Let’s head to the cellar and learn more about this whirlwind area:

We may not be Kansas but Arkansas still has a very high tornado rate compared to the rest of the United States.

Getty Images/clintspencer As soon as spring arrived so did the cyclones. Between March and April, Arkansas saw nine news-worthy tornado touch downs. The EF3 tornado in Jonesboro even caused a plane to flip and train to derail!

Although we’re technically on the outskirts of the boundaries of the nation’s tornado alley, we’re still on the map for other ’nader records.

Wikipedia/Federal Emergency Management Agency There’s no official boundary but the nation’s tornado alley usually includes Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. These states have the highest frequency of strong tornadoes. Arkansas may not be included in this alley but we are apart of “Dixie Alley,” an area of the Mid-South with relatively high tornado frequency and damage.

A pattern of tornadoes can also be drawn within the state as well.

National Weather Service Looking inward, Arkansas has its own tornado alley. Tornadoes in the state primarily follow along interstate 30 and U.S. Highway 67/167. The counties around this path have records of 35 or more tornadoes since 1950!

Unfortunately, this spring is forecast to be the most active tornado season Arkansas has seen in years.

If you live within the boundaries of Arkansas’ tornado alley then you already know to be prepared!

Springtime may be tornado season but it’s just as bad as our winter ice storms.
