A Springtime Polar Vortex Is Headed For Pennsylvania This Weekend

Bundle up, Pennsylvania. While this spring has been anything but predictable, we’re in for another chilly surprise. A springtime polar vortex is headed right for Pennsylvania, and parts of the state could see stunningly cold temperatures this Mother’s Day weekend.

If you’re wondering just how low the temperatures are expected to drop late Friday through Saturday in Eastern Pennsylvania, particularly Philadelphia, forecasters predict it will be warmer in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Weather Channel, in fact, is forecasting a low of 34 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday night and 37 degrees Fahrenheit for Saturday night for the Philadelphia region. (The National Weather Service predicts 37 degrees both nights.)

In contrast, Fairbanks is expecting a low of 43 degrees Fahrenheit Friday evening.

While the Philadelphia region is looking at colder than normal temperatures the next few nights, northern Pennsylvania may see accumulating snowfall overnight Friday into Saturday.

Temperatures will dip below freezing to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Weather Channel, overnight Friday into Saturday. Saturday night’s temperatures are expected to hover at 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you live in the western part of Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, you might see some snow flurries. Temperatures are expected to drop to 28 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday evening in the Pittsburgh area, according to the Weather Channel.

The cold temperatures could put any plants you have outdoors at risk, so bring in those that you can. If you can’t bring your plants in, cover them, if you can.
