With smart phones and web access just about everywhere, it can be hard to find a way to entertain kids in a way that doesn’t involve an app, a video game or something else that requires putting a face into a phone. From the outside, the planetarium in the science building at University of Southern Maine in Portland might look slightly…boring.

But walk inside and we’re certain you’ll change your mind. Located in the basement, Southworth Planetarium is one of the best hidden gems in the entire state!

And its size helps it actually feel like a hidden gem. Tucked away and hidden at the bottom of a set of stairs, the planetarium ticket booth is a small counter that also offers various and sundry space-related gifts and toys.

And that includes lava lamps, astronaut ice cream, bouncy balls and pencils! This is fun all on its own!

Just about every day you’ll find at least one show playing. at the planetarium.

As you’d expect, some shows focus just on the night sky. But we love that other shows offers education about dinosaurs, the ice age and the human body.

The theater can also be rented out for larger groups and there are 30 different shows that can be shown during these private sessions.

And best of all, these shows are much lower in cost than other planetariums.

Southworth Planetarium is officially open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. But note that shows take place at varying times throughout the day.
