A Mainer Is Helping Neighbors In Need By Delivering Food Using Dog Sleds

There’s something about a Mainer that means kindness. Throughout the state, folks come together during trying times to help each other out. Most of the time, this means snowstorms and other difficult weather. It might mean helping someone dig a car out of a snowbank or it might mean watching the kids while a parent goes to work. But, during these days we’re seeing kindness in a whole new way.

The small town, home to less than 9,000 residents, might be located off-the-beaten-path for some, but it’s the kind of place where good things happen.

Neighbors have been helping neighbors as back as far as folks can remember and today’s uncertain times are no exception.

Hannah Lucas, who moved to Maine to pursue Siberian husky racing, is an employee of the local Circle K store.

She recently noticed that older folks in the community were coming into the store for staples like eggs, milk and the small assortment of fruits and vegetables. But, as we all know now, even these short visits presented the risk of catching COVID-19.

Realizing that these folks might be in need of a little extra help, Lucas is delivering supplies and food to this population who live a further out of town. All so they can continue to social-distance and keep themselves out of harm’s way.

She takes orders on the phone before picking up whatever is needed. Then, she and the dogs deliver the parcels to trails near the homes. She lets recipients know where to go and they can then check that they’ve got what they need.
