New Orleans may be known as the Big Easy, but New Orleanians are anything but easy. We are a stalwart krewe and some of the toughest people in the country. Here are some examples of New Orleanians perseverance and endurance that all add up to one tough as nails city.

  1. We don’t let the summer heat stop us.

Bark/Flickr July and August can be pretty brutal, but we don’t let that stop us from passing a good time. We’ll still spend the entire day in the sun attending a festival, walking the streets, or just sitting on our porches sipping sweet tea.

  1. We don’t let setbacks set us back.

David Reber/Flickr From Katrina to blown NFL calls, New Orleans has endured many set backs. But we press on, stronger and more determined than ever.

  1. Katrina

Nasa/Flickr Had to mention the elephant in the room. Any city that can go through a storm like that and come out on the other side is tougher than tough.

  1. Our streets have… “character”

Eugene Peretz/Flickr Driving in New Orleans can seem more like an extreme sport, dodging those potholes. But you know what? It makes out cars tougher, right?

  1. Our drinks are as strong as we are.

Pherit/Flickr When your signature drinks are called hurricanes and hand grenades, that should give you an idea of the level that we are on.

  1. We can spend days living off of King Cake

Infrogmation/Flickr It’s a good thing these delicious sweet treats aren’t popular year round. Carnival season means you load up on King Cakes, enjoying (at least) a slice a day, and it becomes a staple in your diet for 6 weeks. That’s why we all leave the knife in the box, we know we’re just going to eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until a new king cake shows up on the counter top.

  1. From an early age, we are put to the test.

Brock Tice/Flickr No other city puts their children on the top of a ladder.

  1. Few can handle the heat like we can.

Cookbookman17/Flickr No, we’re not talking about the temperature again. We like our food spicy, building toughness from the inside out.

  1. No other city identifies with a symbol as much as we do.

Jackie Ann/Flickr The fleur de lis has become our own little bat signal. We put it in our business logos, decorate our homes with it, and even tattoo it on our bodies permanently. It’s a symbol of the strength of the city, and how tough New Orleanians truly are.
