We love New Hampshire for all its beauty and abundance, but we also love the creepier side of things. In a state with as much history the Granite State, there’s bound to be some seriously haunted spots. Some are more obvious – the ones we heard about growing up and were told to avoid – but others might just surprise you. Have you been to any of these? Do you believe they’re really haunted?

  1. Kimball Castle, Gilford

Ken Gallager at English Wikipedia [Public domain] You won’t be able to explore the ruins of this castle anymore, but the eerie feel of it emanates from just outside. It’s reported that the clocks inside once began working after being out of service. Others have told stories of lights turning on and off. More prevalent are stories of people simply feeling uneasy while being near the home. It’s said that the spirit living here is not friendly and would prefer to be left alone.

  1. Alton Hall, Alton

dougtone / Flickr People here report hearing doors slam, heavy footsteps, moving furniture with no one around to touch it. Oh and voices. All of this is happening without any actual people being around. Given that the Alton Town Hall is one of the older buildings in town it’s not all that surprising.

  1. Gilson Cemetery

Michaela Therrien / Google Folks say that a visit to Gilson means cold spots and eerie sounds. Others say you can feel yourself being pushed backwards as you walk among the gravestones. Is there an eerie hooded figure walking here at night? Some say so!

  1. The Ocean Born Mary House, Henniker

derrypubliclibrary / Flickr Ocean Born Mary was born on a ship coming from Ireland that was captured by pirates. The pirate captain agreed to spare the ship and those aboard it if her mother would name the child after his mother, Mary. As the story goes, this pirate captain came to New Hampshire years later when Mary was widowed, and she looked after him in his old age. Supposedly he buried his treasure in Mary’s son Robert’s house in Henniker, and she still haunts the building to protect it.

  1. Pine Hill Cemetery, Hollis

jaydro / Flickr This might just be one of the most haunted cemeteries, if not overall places, in the entire state. Home to members of the Blood family, it’s often referred to as “Blood Cemetery.” While some believe the family was murdered, there’s still no proof of that. There is, however, reason to believe that Abel Blood is still guarding the area. Folks have reported seeing orbs in photographs, hearing voices, seeing running figures and generally just feeling unsettled. You can learn more about the haunted cemetery here

  1. Colonial Theatre, Laconia

609 Main Street / Facebook During the renovation of Laconia’s historic Colonial Theatre, people thought the hauntings would end. Voices, moving curtains and things falling for no reason are just a few of the things coming out of this old building. Word on the street is that the place is just as haunted as always. Guess some things always stay the same!

  1. New Hampshire State Hospital, Concord

r80o / Flickr Built in 1842, this state hospital treated the mentally ill for many years. Today there’s a wonderful psychiatric hospital been just next to the old state hospital, but the abandoned buildings still stand. Those who visit it and explore the area report strange noises and the sense that they are being followed.

drocpsu / Flickr While there are a number of buildings on the UNH campus that have been reported haunted, the two with the most activity are Smith Hall and Thompson Hall. People report feeling cold spots and hearing footsteps coming from places where people are not allowed to go
