Louisiana is a special place, no doubt about it. There are so many unique things about the Bayou State that it’s impossible to name them all; however, are several things that Louisianians will defend passionately, and we’ve listed some of our favorites down below. Of course, many of them are food-related because, let’s be honest, when it comes to our recipes, we can be pretty stubborn about what goes in our Cajun and Creole delicacies.

  1. Their Roux.

Eugene Kim/Flickr Everyone has their own way to make it, and you likely have a special roux pan and special roux wooden spoon reserved exclusively for making it.

  1. Their gumbo recipe.

Stu_Spivack/Flickr Maybe it’s your family recipe that’s been passed down from generation to generation, or maybe it’s your own personal recipe that you’ve been tinkering with for years. Regardless, you know exactly how to make it, and yours is the best.

  1. Whether or not tomatoes should go in a gumbo.

  1. Crawfish boils.

Billy Brown/Flickr When it comes to crawfish boils, Louisiana’s can get pretty territorial about what goes in the pot and what doesn’t. We can all agree on the standards like potatoes, corn, and sausage… but when citrus enters the mix, the debate heats up.

  1. Sports teams.

Erik Drost/Flickr Who dat! There’s no other football fan base that loves their team more than Saints fan.

  1. Who has the best po’boys.

  1. Hot sauce.

Mitch Bennett/Flickr Most Louisianians are loyal to Tabasco, but there’s also a big fan base for Crystal and Louisiana hot sauce. Which one is your favorite?
