For some, winter is a time to stay home and hibernate. But if you suffer from cabin fever, that’s definitely not your best option. Luckily, Oklahoma has plenty of delightful small towns that seem especially pleasant this time of year. Here are seven spots you can (and should) visit before spring.
- Guthrie

- Chandler
Jim Whiteley / Flickr Chandler dates back to 1891, and it still maintains quite a historic charm. This little town is full of museums, shops, and the notorious McJerry 66 Gallerie.
- Claremore
Wikipedia Claremore is home to the famous Will Rogers Museum, where you can explore Will’s life and accomplishments. But that’s hardly all there is to do in this historic town. The Victorian style Belvidere Mansion is open all year, and so is Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park.
- Tishomingo
tishomingo.ok.gov Named after the Chickasaw chief who died of smallpox on the Trail of Tears, Tishomingo is a small town with a ton of character. It was a simple, sleepy town until recently, when Blake Shelton opened his Ole Red Restaurant here. But even with the eatery’s popularity, this place maintains a quiet vibe.
- Alva
pcol / Flickr Alva might be a tiny town, but you’ll never run out of things to do there, even in the winter. Bundle up and check out the Mural District, spend the afternoon being pampered at Spa Deco, then enjoy a meal at one of Alva’s tasty restaurants, like El Maya.
- Woodward
Becky McCray / Flickr Woodward was once on the Great Western Cattle Trail, and before that, the area was occupied by the Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. Boiling Springs State Park is quiet this time of year, but it’s as beautiful as ever.
- Pauls Valley
