Wikipedia/Kazvorpal Elijah Lovejoy was an abolitionist who ran a press that published papers on anti-slavery. His writings were so controversial that he became a target to slaveholders and his printing presses were thrown in the Mississippi River. An angry mob killed him in 1837 even though Illinois was a free state. His death attracted national attention, and even Abraham Lincoln spoke out on the matter. Though Lovejoy’s body was originally buried in an unmarked grave, it was later exhumed to be buried at this memorial.
