There are a lot of ways to enjoy Maine, no matter what the season. From hikes to swims to restaurant visits, it’s all right in our own backyard. But, there are times when we can’t actually make it out to do all of these things. And when that happens, rest assured that you can save many of them for later. Here are just a few activities that we’ve got in our back pocket to pull out when the time is right!
- Hiking with Alpacas, Southport
Cape Newagen Alpaca Farm capenewagenfarm.com / Facebook Cape Newagen Alpaca Farm in Southport offers lots of handmade goods made from alpaca fur, but what we love are the hikes they offer! In the spring and summer you can take a one-hour journey with alpacas throughout their farm and around the surrounding area. Learn more about it here!
- Ocean Path Hike, Acadia National Park
ugardener / Flickr You don’t need to be an expert hiker to enjoy the trails in Acadia National Park. And this one is a great example. Make your way through the forest and along the coast, while taking in Thunder Hole, Otter Point and everything in between!
- Mount Battie, Camden
Jamie McCaffrey / Flickr The trail leading to the top of Mount Battie results in some of the most beautiful views of Cadillac Mountain. You’ll also see Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay, and the surrounding islands. Not in the mood to hike it? You can also just drive.
- Red’s Eats, Wiscasset
Red’s Eats / Facebook Sure there’s a lot of hype around this place, but there’s no denying that waiting in line right near traffic is an adventure! Expect to dig into lobster rolls with pieces that are large enough to dip directly into the melted butter provided on the side.
- The Bar Island Trail, Bar Harbor
breatheindigital / Flickr This is a great adventure for folks who aren’t looking to go uphill. The route is actually a gravel sandbar connecting Bar Harbor with Bar Island. The most fun part? It’s only accessible for about 3 hours during low tide! Do it by heading to the trailhead at Bridge Street in town.
- Take Flight Aerial Adventure Course, Kittery
Take Flight Aerial Adventure Park / Facebook This fun adventure course is great for people who don’t have a fear of heights. But, even if you do, you’ll be in safe hands as you zip and dip high above the ground at this aerial adventure course in the trees. If you’re really a thrill seeker, the Aerial Adventure Challenge Course offers the chance to try multi-vines, catwalks, tube nets, swinging tires, swinging platforms and their Super Swing!
- Step Falls Trail, Newry
binkley27 / Flickr This simple 1-mile trail leads directly to the base of the falls, which are among the highest in Maine. To see things a bit differently you can take a slightly more challenging hike up to the top. In addition to the falls you’ll also be able to see Wight Brook along the way as well as lots of wildlife. You can even swim here!
- Alewive Woods Preserve, Kennebunk
skypictures / Flickr The most wild of you might not consider this to be much of an “adventure,” but those who enjoy peace and calm with just love this! The forested preserve is about 625 acres including Alewife Pond. The looped trail leads to the pond and back. And, we love it in the spring when there are wildflowers. Wait until the summer and you can even pick blueberries.
- The International Cryptozoology Museum, Portland
latt / Flickr This place is great if you like the kind of adventure that can be had without trekking into the wilderness! This is the world’s only museum exploring the study of hidden or unknown animals such as Yetis, Bigfoot, Lake Monsters, and Sea Serpents, as well as hundreds of other yet-to-be-found animals (cryptids) is located right here in Maine.
- South Bubble Mountain and Jordan Pond, Mt. Desert Island, Acadia National Park
dustin_j_williams / Flickr There are so many adventures to be had in this region of the state, that it’s hard to choose just a few. But, the hike to South Bubble on Bubble Mountains is one of the more accessible routes in Acadia National Park. And, as an added bonus, at the top you’ll see the glacial erratic perched precariously at the side of the mountain.
And just one more thing we love? Following the river on this 4-mile hike through the woods in Maine!
