People aren’t always around to be travel buddies and road trip friends. Sometimes you’re the only one with vacation days and the urge to get driving. These are some of our favorite things to do around Kansas that don’t require taking anyone else with you.
- Mushroom Rock State Park - Brookville
craig clifton/Google These giant mushroom shaped rocks are unique to this area of Kansas, where you can’t find anything quite like them. Long years of erosion took away the softer rock underneath until only enough to hold up the top was left. Today they’re a great spot for hiking and taking photos. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Clover Cliff Ranch - Elmdale
Clover Cliff Ranch/Google Taking a day away from everyone and everything isn’t always easy, but it is when you’re in a bed and breakfast surrounded by the beautiful Flint Hills! Bliss never felt nicer than being alone in the hills. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Lindsborg, Kansas
nowincolorado/TripAdvisor These beautiful Dala horses are all around town, where they’re a perfect subject for photos and a great excuse to wander around exploring the town. Who knows what friends you could make, or where you will find? Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Emmeram Church - Victoria
Thomas Marten/Google Exploring ruins isn’t always legal, but if you get permission to be on the property, odds are you’ll be alright. I’d love to see the photos people get from places like this abandoned (and broken) church in Elmdale. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- McPherson Opera House
McPherson Opera House Facebook A stunning building like this opera house doesn’t need any buddies to explore, and that’s okay. It’s over 100 years old, and still in beautiful condition. Perfect for exploring! Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- King’s Sandwich Shop - Iola
ClarisaA/OnlyInYourState When you’re hungry in the Iola area, getting a nice meal at this sandwich shop is easy peasy. Fresh cheeseburgers and plenty of fried sides to choose from, if you don’t end up ordering multiple. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Kanopolis Lake State Park - Marquette
Vincent Parsons/Flickr This gorgeous lake area is home to plenty of hiking, caves, and more. It’s too easy to lose hours at a time here, especially if you decide to fish or camp here. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Eisenhower State Park - Osage City
Kansas Wildlife, Parks & Tourism - Eisenhower State Park Facebook Another great state park, Eisenhower is perfect for getting away from everything. Sleeping in one of their yurts is like a Kansas getaway all its own. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Mid-America All-Indian Center - Wichita
Mid-America All-Indian Center Facebook This stunning Kansas museum is sadly overlooked by many, but holds a great wealth of information if you’re ready to explore. Wander at your own pace and take in all the beauty in one piece at a time. Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
- Alcove Springs - Elm Creek
Aaron Hall/Flickr This stunning little waterfall is one of our favorites, and on a day after it’s rained a bit, come down for a great relaxing visit. It’s a short hike, but can be muddy! Check out the full piece we’ve written about this place for more information!
If you have any place you love to visit alone for some time away from it all, share with us! We love to hear where you go when your buddies can’t go with you. If you have a great idea, submit it here and we’ll take a look!
